“Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” Star Seeks To Set Record Straight On “Woke” Comment

Just over a month ago Hudson Thames, Actor portraying Peter Parker in “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”  garnered internet backlash for voicing that he had concerns that the show was going to be too “Woke” and “Annoying.” Thames has been silent until this last week when he joined JuJu Green (aka Straw Hat Goofy) on the ‘Get Rec’d w/ Straw Hat Goofy Podcast’.

Juju wasted no time to express his thoughts about how harmful and charged the negative use of the word ‘woke’ was by implying it just means forced diversity. Hudson explained that his statement was taken out of context and was in response to his frustration for the negative discourse on social media in response to the then upcoming series. While talking with Juju, Hudson agreed that he wouldn’t have accepted the role if he were afraid of diversity within the story and that his lack of a response to the backlash was more introspective, ensuring that he thought through his words.

The conversation continued with the importance of carefully choosing wording, and how the internet can immediately respond to poor choices of phrasing. It was also stated that the original publication chose to take his phrasing out of context causing the misunderstanding, which is not unheard of considering how discourse misled the public to believe that Brie Larson was disliked by her costars when the contrary was true.

You can watch the clip from ‘Get Rec’d’ below to hear the conversation yourself. You can find the ‘Get Rec’d Podcast here.

“Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is streaming now on Disney+.
