I can definitely see the value in this film as it marks a promising step towards revitalizing the franchise. There’s an impressive level of suspense and tension developed throughout Alien Romulus, and the film incorporates several great callbacks that fans will appreciate. However, in many ways, it does feel like a rehash of previous themes and ideas from the series. While I recognize that this approach resonates with a lot of viewers, I would argue that it doesn’t really introduce anything fundamentally new to the universe of Alien. While the film succeeds as a compelling horror narrative, it may not fully capture the essence of what makes a truly great Alien film.
Fede Alvarez brought a refreshing perspective to the Evil Dead franchise in 2013, but with Alien Romulus, I felt there was a slight decline in the sense of originality and magic that he previously delivered.
On my podcast, The Reel Study, all the other panelists rated this film a perfect 10/10, while I found myself in the minority with a more critical viewpoint. Despite this initial reaction, I do plan to give the film another chance, as I want to ensure my mood on the day of viewing didn’t cloud my experience. It’s not uncommon for me to rewatch films that didn’t resonate with me the first time around, only to discover a newfound appreciation for them on subsequent viewings.
