Blue Beetle: Definitely An Installment Worth Keeping In The New DCU

I’m fashionably late to the party on this one. I hesitated at first because, let’s be honest, most of the DCEU films have been disappointing, to say the least, with a few bordering on outright disasters. However, I found “Blue Beetle” to be a delightful surprise! Its origin story is charming and draws some intriguing parallels to Iron Man’s, hitting on key themes and moments that resonate.

What stood out to me was the refreshing departure from the exaggerated tone of the other DCEU films. The CGI and special effects are nothing short of impressive—kudos to those teams for their hard work! The sets also really brought the story to life. I loved how the film explored the dynamic between rich and poor through the lens of the protagonist and antagonist’s families. While the start may feel a bit goofy and slow, the movie finds its stride during the second act.

One of my favorite moments was witnessing Jaime’s family not only supporting him but also stepping up to fight alongside Blue Beetle. It was such a breath of fresh air to see them involved throughout his transformation, skipping the tedious secret identity trope that so often drags superhero stories down. This is a genuinely fun origin story—especially refreshing in a genre where most origin narratives miss the mark, or, like Batman, are revisited so many times that they lose their punch.

I’m really glad to hear that James Gunn plans to keep Blue Beetle in the DC universe rather than starting over from scratch. It feels like it could seamlessly fit within the existing DCEU or the upcoming DCU, and I’m all for more films like this! Come on, Warner Brothers, keep them coming!

Blue Beetle is available now on VOD and Streaming on MAX
