I generally have a real soft spot for biopics. It doesn’t matter if I’m familiar with the person or their story—I’m usually all in for the ride. However, “Better Man,” focusing on a British pop star I’d never heard of, left me feeling like I could have skipped it altogether. Don’t get me wrong; it’s a well-crafted film, but the storyline felt so predictable and uninspiring that it failed to captivate me. No offense to Robbie, but this one just didn’t hit the mark.

What really threw me off was the choice to have him play himself as a chimp throughout the movie. This was actually what intrigued me about the film initially! While I understand the creative direction, it might have been more effective to give a young actor a chance to portray him instead of Robbie playing himself. Honestly, seeing him play himself felt a bit cringeworthy, much like Howard Stern playing himself in “Private Part.” The whole concept of a chimp was a clever idea, but the CGI just didn’t deliver the quality to make it work. I found myself disengaged because of it.
If you’re curious, give it a shot, but I honestly think this is one you could easily pass on!
Paramount’s Better Man is available now on streaming and VOD.
