The other night, knowing that my 10 year old has quickly become a major Godzilla fan, I decided to introduce him to Pacific Rim. While watching the movie, he turned to me and asked if there was a sequel, to which I responded…No. Hear me out.

In 2013 Guillermo del Toro known for his directing dark films like Pans Labyrinth, Hell Boy, and Blade II, wrote and directed Pacific Rim. Following the world as it deals with a constant onslaught of Kaiju attacks. By utilizing Giant mechanized weapons called Jaegers mankind fights to prevent casualties across the planet. Then facing the decommissioning of the Jaeger program, a team of pilots unite for one last attack on the portal that all Kaiju come from called the “Rift” hoping to close it and save mankind, once and for all.

This film had everything going for it, a solid story, stunning visuals, and a great cast of characters. Even after watching it throughout over a decade, I can still sit down and enjoy this film time and again!
But as for the Sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, I have had no interest in watching the film. Uprising was released in 2018 and contained some of the old cast, but a good number of new up-and-coming faces at the time. I won’t lie, John Boyega (Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Attack the Block) was a name that did make the film more appealing for me, but after hearing reviews, AND the synopsis of the plot, I had no interest in acknowledging it. It was also too soon since another sequel ruined, in my opinion, one of my favorite movies…Independence Day.

If you are reading this and you like the sequel, that’s great! I have no ill will, but for me, I’ll pass.
And this friends, is why I lured you here… there are many remakes, sequels, and franchises that are taking chances to tell more, new, or different stories. Many of those stories will only appeal to a niche group of audience members. Instead of openly trashing something you do not want or like, take the time to consider why you don’t like something, realize it might not be for you, and move on.
I think there are way too many people that think their specific taste in films are commonly held by the masses, and they don’t understand the plethora of different views that are out there. We are a very diverse society with different tastes, preferences, and opinions. No one viewpoint should have more weight over any other.
In conclusion, go see a movie for yourself, gather your own opinion and respect others.
