A Minecraft Movie: A Good Film, Made Better When Taking Kids

Last week, I found myself making the journey to the Overworld with my 10 year old by my side. Though I have had experience playing the game over the last 15+ years, this visit to my local Regal was his idea… His absolutely insistent idea, and I’m honestly thankful he pushed for us to go.

If you plan to go see this movie, please consider the following:

  1. If you are an adult, much of this film is not for you. There will be references and moments that you may not get, because you are not the target audience. Many of the jokes and references in the film are geared not only to those that have played the game, but also around the streaming culture surrounding it.
  2. Almost every viewing of this film in theaters will involve children, of all ages. Be prepared for a level of crowd participation that leans more to the juvenile. I personally enjoyed having the crowd shout out lines they learned from the trailers, and the cheering at the most ridiculous moments.

Overall Thoughts

A Minecraft Movie has more heart and a solid message that drives this film. The movie playfully respects the lore and following of the popular game, while allowing for influence from the spin off games and shows. The film is visually stunning and extremely well paced, making you want more and hoping for a sequel (Which it leaves a tease of what could happen next). The humor hits, Jack Black sings, and Jason Mamoa is really funny.  I walked away enjoying myself more than I anticipated and having a great moment of bonding with my kid that bridged my Minecraft experience with his. That is worth it’s weight in gold!

Go see A Minecraft Movie yourself, and be sure to bring a kid with you for a better experience. Only in Theaters now!
