Former Superman Dean Cain Slams “Redneck” Kents, Current Martha Kent Actress Retorts
A new debate about the Man of Steel’s origins has been sparked, pitting a former Superman against the newest inhabitant of Smallville.
Dean Cain, who played Clark Kent in the 1990s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, recently voiced strong criticism of Superman from director James Gunn. In an interview with Variety, Cain took issue with the portrayal of Clark’s adoptive earth parents.
“James Gunn and his decision to make Ma and Pa Kent the stupid rednecks. That’s a choice,” Cain said. He further questioned the film’s narrative direction, noting, “And Superman has to be saved, like, repeatedly? On a movie this size, every decision is a choice made carefully.”
Cain, who has since moved into a political and punditry career, also added a personal note, mentioning that DC Studios co-head Peter Safran was “a year ahead of me” at Princeton, but “he’s never hired me.”
In response, Neva Howell, the actress cast as Martha Kent in Gunn’s film, addressed Cain’s comments. Taking to social media, she offered a diplomatic but firm rebuttal.
“I bear no ill will towards #deancain,” Howell wrote. “He’s entitled to his opinion. However, I strongly disagree with his characterization of Ma and Pa Kent.”
Howell’s measured yet definitive response not only highlights the grace with which she is handling the critique but also firmly defends the creative vision of the new film. By confidently asserting her disagreement, she reassures fans that the portrayal of Ma and Pa Kent will be one of integrity and substance, effectively positioning Cain’s comments as an outdated and uninformed perspective.
