“Monkey Man” A Masterfully Written Action Film

This movie rocked my world! It pushed me to reflect deeply on my life, my purpose, and my family, especially my father and how he would have approached these trying times. Rather than causing a crisis of conscience, it brought me a refreshing clarity about the kind of future I want to see. In these turbulent times, it’s clear that Dev Patel is acutely aware of our struggles, as shown through his masterful writing and direction of this film.

While “Monkey Man” draws some inspiration from “John Wick,” it digs far deeper than just surface-level action. The story of a boy growing into a man in pursuit of vengeance for his mother isn’t new, but this film offers a compelling and innovative twist. The theme of rising up to become the person you were always meant to be, hit me hard; it might have even transformed me in some way. I know that sounds extreme, but real art can ignite change, if you’re open to it.

From a cinematic perspective, the film is stunningly shot and incredibly well-directed, especially considering it’s Patel’s first outing behind the camera. The pacing kept me completely hooked, and the celebration of Indian culture throughout added layers of richness. Sure, some of the action sequences are wildly over-the-top, yet they feel believable against the backdrop of the character’s journey. I found myself cheering and tearing up alongside ‘Kid’ every step of the way. If this is just the beginning for Dev Patel, I can’t wait to see what he brings us next!

A huge nod to Jordan Peele for his role in bringing this film to life. Themes of inclusivity, empathy, anti-fascism, hope, and resistance pulse through this narrative, and let’s face it, we all need more of that in today’s world.

Do yourself a favor and watch this movie! You won’t regret it!
