Every great story has an origin, but few are as poignant and directly personal as the one behind Daredevil #266, "A Beer with the Devil." The classic Christmas comic, crafted by Eisner Award-winning writer Ann Nocenti and artist John Romita Jr., is famed for its bleak take on the holiday. However, its actual weight stems from a very real moment of unexpected connections of experiences by its writer. Daredevil's Christmas Day The issue is a brilliant performance on the existential despair of one Matt Murdock. On a dreary Christmas Eve, a broken Matt Murdock having fully embraced his darker Daredevil persona, sulks at the bar top. He is approached by an alluring lady who engages Matt in a debate, questioning the worth of his heroism and suggesting the world is beyond redemption from its sins. Distracted by her, he fails […]

In the world of comic books the story as old as time is intellectual property, few topics are as volatile as creator royalties. A recent interview with the acclaimed artist Sara Pichelli, co-creator of Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, was taken out of context from a good-faith conversation, ultimately forcing the creator to publicly clean up the mess. The Misleading Transcript: Crafting a Narrative of Anger During a busy interview at CCXP, Pichelli engaged in a conversation with other writers and fans. A brief, ironic exchange about the business side of her popular creation was later isolated and published without its original tone. The transcript read as an annoyed dig: Interviewer: "And what about those other products that came along with Miles, inspired by him… do you get any share of that money?" Sara Pichelli: "If only! Don’t even mention it… […]

Eisner Award-winning writer Ram V has detailed that he had a bit of inspiration from Tite Kubo’s ‘Big Three’ shonen manga and anime Bleach on his series, The New Gods. This is not some sort of simple copy and paste homage, Ram V explains he was drawing from Bleach’s core philosophy of power being intertwined between character archetypes to take a deeper look at Jack Kirby’s Fourth World pantheon. The Bleach Framework: Powerscale, Wagers, and Artistry In Ram V’s opinion, Bleach arranges a beautiful balance of both powerscaling and more personal decisive investments for characters. “We took inspiration from things like Bleach,” he confirmed. “Yeah, absurd power levels, but still, every fight feels like it has real stakes, and everything feels like, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, okay, it matters.’” Ram V draws attention specifically to the particularly original, character-specific nature of […]

In an exclusive look ahead on the CBR: Heroes Journey Podcast, multi-award-winning writer Scott Snyder unveiled the emotional core of the next arc in DC’s Absolute Batman. While the nightmarish Scarecrow steps into the spotlight as the antagonist, the real conflict will be one that is internal. It forces Bruce Wayne to confront a painful belief: that his mission inherently hurts everyone he lets into his circle. “The next arc brings in Scarecrow and all of this is largely about his relationships with his friends,” Snyder revealed. The plot will hinge on a melancholy conclusion Bruce Wayne reaches. “And how he decides… all he does is hurt people, so he needs to actually shut everybody out. And it's the wrong way to go.” This isolating choice will have profound consequences, pulling Bruce toward unexpected alliances. “It brings him closer to […]

The meticulous work of a stop-motion animator is well known for its delicately handcrafted detail and animagic. But for the Academy Award-winning Australian animator Adam Elliot’s 2024 feature film, Memoir of a Snail, one detail is more personal and fairly grotesque. In a past interview with Cartoonbrew.com at the first screening in Accecy, Elliot revealed that a jar appearing in multiple scenes of the film contains a very real piece of human anatomy: the severed fingertip of one of his animators. The story involves Elliot’s second cousin, Donna Yeatman, a very talented but “a little bit clumsy” member of the claymation crew. “She wasn’t as experienced as the other members of the crew,” Elliot recounted. “She was always stabbing herself, or cutting herself, and one day she chopped off the top of her finger and it bounced off the workbench, […]
